Shopify Page Not Indexed in Google Search Console: What Got Our Stuck URL Indexed

Shopify Field Notes ··Johnny Chen Founder & Shopify Developer at CheckoutWorks
Cover reading “From Unknown to Indexed” beside two windows: an old handle marked Not on Google and a URL Inspection panel showing the new handle as Indexed.

One of our own articles stayed out of Google for about three weeks. Search Console reported URL is unknown to Google, the page had no technical fault, and repeated indexing requests changed nothing. Google indexed it almost immediately after we changed the article handle and kept the redirect.

If your Shopify page is not indexed, first rule out the causes that Shopify itself creates, which are listed in the table below. If none applies and the URL has never been indexed, a new handle is worth trying once. It does not always work: a second article of ours stayed unknown through two handle changes and was indexed a few hours after we rewrote its title and opening.

What We Observed on Our Own Store

In September 2026, one CheckoutWorks article stayed at URL is unknown to Google in URL Inspection for about three weeks. Other articles on the same blog were usually indexed within minutes of an indexing request. The stuck URL passed the basic checks: 200 status, self-referencing canonical, sitemap entry, and internal links from other articles.

The old URL in URL Inspection. It showed the same reason before we changed the handle.

These actions did not change the status:

  • Clicking Request indexing repeatedly.
  • Rewriting sections of the article.
  • Changing the title and requesting indexing again.

This action did: we changed the article handle and kept the redirect from the old URL. Google indexed the new URL almost immediately, with the same content. The article is now our guide to building a Shopify FAQ page with metaobjects.

Because identical content was indexed at a new address, the delay appears to have been tied to the old URL. We do not know why Google never picked up that URL. This is one case on one store, and it does not prove that Google treats every stuck URL this way.

A second article behaved differently in October 2026. It also stayed at URL is unknown to Google while newer articles on the blog were indexed quickly, and it passed the same checks. We changed its handle twice in its first two days, and each new URL showed the same status. Two days after the last handle change, we kept the handle and rewrote the title, meta description, opening paragraph, and two headings, then requested indexing once. Search Console showed the URL as indexed a few hours later. That article is our guide to showing blog posts in Horizon search results.

We cannot separate the causes in the second case. The rewrite, the extra days, and a URL that finally stayed in place all happened together. Taken with the first case, a new handle is a step to try once, and it is not a dependable fix.

Change the Handle Safely

  1. Confirm the URL is still not indexed. Use this only for a URL with no rankings, backlinks, or ad traffic to lose.
  2. In Shopify admin, open the product, page, or article and edit the URL handle under Search engine listing.
  3. Keep Create a URL redirect checked, then save.
  4. Update menus and internal links that still use the old URL.
  5. Inspect the new URL in Search Console and request indexing once.

Change the handle once. If the new URL also stays at URL is unknown to Google, leave it in place for several days before changing anything else. Each new handle is a new URL that Google has to discover from the start.

Leave the handle of an indexed page alone. A redirect passes visitors along, but Google has to process the move, and rankings can shift while it does.

Rule Out Shopify's Own Causes First

A handle change helps only when nothing else explains the status. Inspect the exact URL in Search Console and compare the reason under Page indexing with this table.

Status in Search Console Usual cause on Shopify Action
Alternate page with proper canonical tag A second address for the same product, such as /collections/…/products/… or a ?variant= URL None. Inspect the /products/ URL instead
Blocked by robots.txt Shopify's default rules for cart, checkout, account, sorted or multi-filtered collection URLs, and theme previews None for these URLs
Excluded by ‘noindex’ tag The seo.hidden metafield, an Unlisted product, an SEO app, or theme code Remove the source if the page should rank
Page with redirect An old handle that now redirects None. Inspect the destination URL
Not found (404) A deleted product or page, or an old theme asset URL Redirect it only if a real replacement exists
Crawled or Discovered – currently not indexed No Shopify setting controls these Check the content and internal links, then wait

Two of these rows cause most false alarms. We checked both on our own store:

  • Duplicate product addresses. Our collection path and ?variant= URLs each declare the plain /products/ URL as canonical. Google reports the extra addresses as alternates because it indexed the canonical one.
  • Default robots.txt rules. Our generated robots.txt blocks /cart/, /checkout, /orders, /account, collection URLs with sort_by or more than one filter, and any URL with preview_theme_id. A blocked product, collection, page, or article points to a custom robots.txt.liquid template in the theme.

Find What Adds a Noindex Tag

The noindex status is the one that most often needs a real fix. On a page you want in Google, one of these is adding the tag:

  • The seo.hidden metafield. An integer metafield with the namespace and key seo.hidden and a value of 1 hides a product, page, or blog post from search engines, from the sitemap, and from your own store search. SEO apps often set it for you.
  • Unlisted product status. An Unlisted product stays reachable by direct link and is removed from search engines, sitemaps, and store search.
  • Theme code. A <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tag in theme.liquid or a template, sometimes left over from a staging setup.

View the live page source and search for name="robots" to confirm the tag. Then check the resource's metafields, the product status, and any SEO app settings for that page.

When to Stop and Get Help

Stop changing settings when the live test shows a noindex tag or a wrong canonical URL and you cannot find what adds it. The source is then in theme code or an app, and guessing can hide more pages. Our Shopify Bug Fix service covers tracing and removing that kind of code. It does not cover Google's decision to index a page, which stays with Google after the technical cause is cleared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does clicking Request indexing many times help?

It did not help in our case. One request per change is enough, and Google states that repeated requests do not speed up crawling.

What if the new handle is not indexed either?

Keep that handle and stop changing the URL. In our second case, two handle changes did nothing, and the article was indexed a few hours after we rewrote its title and opening and requested indexing once. Give the URL several days before judging the result.

Should I change the handle of a page that is already indexed?

No. Our result applies to a URL that Google had never indexed. An indexed page has rankings and links tied to its current URL, and a handle change puts those at risk for no clear gain.
